Like Montecristo or Romeo Y Julieta the brand name was inspired from the novel of Cervantes "Don Quichotte". The brand was registered in 1848. The brand was under ownership of Ramon Allones in the the 1920's and subsequently was sold to El Rey Del Mundo in 1931. By the 1950's the brand became the most popular one in Spain.
