The history of this brand starts off with two german brothers Augsut and Hermann Upmann (some argue the real family name was "Hupmann"). Hermann, a banker, lands in Cuba in 1840 and becomes right away passionate about cigars. In 1844 he registers his brand and start up his own manufacture. As to his bank it is bankrupt during the depression. His cigar business on the opposite is very healthy: the characteristics of his production - light and very complex cigars - received a warm welcome by smokers around the world. In the mid 20's the business is however acquired by british inverstors and then sold again to Menéndez y Garcia (as they just launched the Montecristo brand). Today the cigars of H. Upmann are manufactured in the first historical building of Partagas.
H. Upmann cigars are in terms of strength light to medium light.
